Amazon Launch Free e-Book Library For Prime Members
Amazon are gearing up for the Kindle Fire launch by introducing an add-on service for Prime members, that already get a free streaming service. The new service is an eBook lending library consisting of thousands of books, “including over 100 current and former New York Times Bestsellers”, that can be borrowed for free.
The digital-book loan service will only work for Amazon Prime program members who own a Kindle or Kindle Fire tablet as the service is not compatible with other makes. The service starts with the number of titles available at around 5,000 books which will not just be old titles but consist of more than 100 national bestsellers.
A restruction to the service will limit borrowers to a single title each month. Users can keep the book as long as they wish, but when a new title is borrowed then the previously book is removed.
However not all publishers are happy giving away free books and the six biggest book publishers in the US are not participating in the deal. Many publishers are said to be concerned that the idea could harm sales.
Speaking about the service Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos said, “Owning a Kindle just got even better. Today, we’re introducing a new Prime benefit built for Kindle: The Kindle Owners’ Lending Library. Prime Members now have exclusive access to a huge library of books to read on any Kindle device at no additional cost and with no due dates.”
