ABC were the first to get internet tv streaming on the new Apple iPad, and have declared the iPad app a big success after the first 10 days since launching. There were over 200,000 downloads in that time which equates to around half of all iPad owners. iPad viewers have viewed 3.2 shows each and a total of around 650,000 shows in total.

The top TV network are not only happy with the stream numbers but also the ad revenue, having had several million ad views since launch. ABC has been serving the same traditional 30 second ads from a host of advertisers that are seen by television audiences. By fall, however, ABC plans to roll out special interactive ads for users of its iPad application and are also looking at using the iPad’s geolocation to personalise ads from local ABC affiliates instead of serving the same ads nationwide.

Anne Sweeney, president of ABC said the network was “pleased” with the results and characterized it as a validation of the company’s expansion into Internet video. ABC will still offer paid shows from the iTunes store and link to them from the iPad app, but the app allows users to legally watch freely available content on their new toy.

Another company who have got into iPad apps pretty sharpish is Netflix who launched an iPad movie on demand service, and a Hulu app is planned soon. Good news for Apple as a recent report shows that internet tv is driving iPad sales right now.
