PopeBenedictyoutubeGoogle have teamed up with Vatican Television and announced that the papel one, Pope Benedict will have a dedicated channel on YouTube showing various holy video’s including speeches, addresses and news about the pontiff and all things catholic.

Pope Benedict XVI is the latest in a long line of public figures who reach their fans using social network websites and video. Barack Obama, has during his campaign used Facebook, YouTube, blogs and discussion boards, to spread the word to potential voters of his.

Dan Olds, an analyst at Gabriel Consulting Group say that for the Roman Catholic Church, creating a YouTube channel “is a good idea. In fact, it’s one of their best ideas. The problem for the church is getting to the grass roots in a vast worldwide audience. They have to get their message to people in the medium that they’re using.”

The Vatican has ventured online before around 14 years back, it launched its own Website, giving access to Vatican Secret Archives and Vatican Museums. And for the scholars, it has a section in the Latin language.
