3DTV Sales Set To Double In 2011
Love it or hate it, 3DTV is coming to get you. Sales of the eye popping tv sets are predicted to double in 2011 say Futuresource Consulting, who are estimating sales worldwide to hit 4 million for this year and to double to 8 million in 2011.
Even though viewers are forced to wear nerdy type glasses, 3DTV seems to be growing at a far greater rate than HDTV did when launched. It is expected that next years sales will comprise of 5 million 3DTV sets sold in the US and 3 million sold to Western Europe.
Futuresource say that for a seemingly complex system, the chips needed for 3D are a low cost item so makes the sets more attractive to manufacturers. They say that “manufacturers are now able to embed 3D chipsets at a relatively low cost, allowing them to increase their margins while still keeping 3D affordable.”
They also say that reports of glasses free 3DTV could be harming current sales, they commented that the news is, “discouraging some consumers from investing in the current generation of 3DTV.” This new technology wont be coming anytime soon though, in fact the technology is “at least four years away” from running on large TV sets for home users, and even then it will take up to seven years before hitting “mass-market pricing.”
This viewpoint is shared by James Cameron who also predicts 3DTV glasses free will take 8 years to reach the mass market.Futuresource’s findings may show that 3D adoption is on the rise, but it doesn’t mean that the vast majority of consumers believe they are ready to adopt the technology.
Although viewers are sitting on the fence with 3D, and the amount of content is not large. It seems that the sheer volume and new movies coming in 3D will turn the tide in the new technologies favor. 3D manufacture is in full flow as major companies get in on the trend. TV manufacturers such as Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Vizio, amongst others are making 3D television sets.
It looks like 3DTV is not just a passing fad, but something that is going to become a must have. Get saving your pennies guys, and make sure any 3DTV you buy is also internet connected or ready.
